Creating A Classroom Background For Virtual Teaching!

Recently my school district informed all teachers to create a classroom setup at home. We were asked to create a background which gave students a sense of physically being present in the class when they visually see it.

The very next instance I looked around my room to picture a space that I could convert for that purpose but realized I had no empty wall to create one. I then looked at the two tier red shelves in the corner of my room that I had created few years ago using wood and paint. I immediately knew this is it! I took off everything that was on there and replaced it with things that I thought would come handy while teaching and also serve as a background for my home classroom setup .

Before
After

My new setup includes the following,

1) Books - I have few children’s books, dictionary, and couple of autobiographies. I can use them during virtual read aloud sessions or for my own reference.

2) Magnetic manipulative - I created these magnetic alphabets, numbers , and shapes to be used during small group sessions or otherwise. I have recently got myself a magnetic board and these resources can be easily used on there. It looks fun, attractive and will surely keep my kiddos engaged.

3) Globe And Compass - I can use it for different concepts in theme and Math including day and night, Earth, water and land, directions, etc .

4) Timer - I can use it for many virtual games including scavenger hunt. Students must be mindful of the time frame given to them. Thus encouraging time management skills.

5) Pointer - It’s with quite a long reach and very handy when I want my learners to focus on a certain word and a sentence. It’s easily available on Amazon.in . Though its a little expensive, it’s good quality, fun, easily helps grab attention, and my kiddos love it when I am using one

6) Cans/ holders - I keep all the extra post-its, fevicol, scissor, stapler, highlighters, pencils, pens, markers, eraser, sharpener, ruler, u-pins, staples, and a Date stamp in separate holders for easy access.

7) Folder - Finally, I have the anchor charts, mind maps and other useful documents that I incorporate during my virtual lessons. I make sure to click a picture of the anchor charts/ mind maps and have it uploaded for parent reference purpose later in the day. I needed to tuck them away and so decided to have a folder in place.

I haven’t used anything too fancy or elaborate. Again as I stated in my previous blog none of this is a necessity. Simple materials and resources that I find useful, I wanted to do it and it brought me joy. So I had to have it. Teachers looking to create a background but have no time, money or space, I hope my home background idea will serve as an alternative.
